Freight rates rise again

After a difficult year, container freight rates from China to Europe have risen again in recent days, online magazine TrasportoEuropa reported, citing the index compiled by Drewry.
The World Container Index released on 5 December shows an increase, on a weekly basis, of +22% in freight rates between Shanghai and Genoa and +19% between Shanghai and Rotterdam. In the former case, the average value was back above the $5,000 per feu threshold ($5,496), one thousand more than the previous week.
The increase between the Chinese and Dutch ports is barely smaller: +19%, bringing the rate to $4,775 per transport unit, almost eight hundred more than the previous week. The freight rate in the reverse route remains
slightly in the red: -1% to 514 dollars.
On the Atlantic route between Rotterdam and New York, container freight rates were down slightly (-1%) in the westbound direction, at $2,649 per feu, and up slightly (+2%) in the eastbound direction, at $807.
