The European Parliament has taken a significant step in the prevention of microplastics by adopting stricter measures to prevent plastic granule leaks.
Yesterday, the Environment Committee of the European Parliament adopted its position on the proposed regulation to prevent plastic granule leaks in order to reduce microplastic pollution. With 71 votes in favour, five against and one abstention, MEPs supported the new rules.
The proposals include an expansion of the definition of plastic granules to include powders, cylinders, beads and flakes, in addition to traditional granules. The new rules would require all entities involved in handling plastic granules to avoid spills and, in the event of an accident, to take immediate containment and clean-up measures.
Other proposed measures include drafting risk assessment plans for facilities handling more than 1,000 tonnes of plastic granules per year and clear labelling of storage and transport containers.
